The Society for Digital Humanities is a learned society devoted to the use of information technology to support analysis, expression and teaching in the Humanities. Founded in 1986 as the Consortium for Computing in the Humanities, the multi-disciplinary society is comprised of members from Canada's universities and colleges.
The purpose of the SDH/SEMI conference is to promote Canadian and international research devoted to the newly emergent field of digital humanities. Our theme for the 2006 meeting will be: "The City -- A Festival of Knowledge". The conference will place special emphasis on papers that use the concept of the city as a frame of departure. Read our Call for Papers here.
Overview of the Conference
From its inception, the Society for Digital Humanities has distinguished itself through its commitment to promote digital humanities scholarship as it is practiced across the spectrum of the human and social sciences. This year will be no different.
As is our usual practice, we will be featuring panels highlighting the latest in humanities and computing scholarship. Several will be panels jointly sponsored by partner learned societies in the Canadian Federation of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
This year we will also be featuring a one-day symposium entitled: "The Computer: the Once and Future Medium for the Humanities and Social Sciences." Featuring invited speakers from the sciences, social sciences and humanities, the symposium will highlight emerging and potential applications of the computer to support research, representation and instruction. Invited speakers will address topics ranging from speech synthesis and historical linguistics to serious computer games.
